Global-positioning systems (GPS) technology is mature. Deployments are well
underway with most major cable operators. The technological intent of deploying GPS is
to realize improvements in automation systems for managing mobile workforces. There
are still under-realized benefits that will help operators. These lie in reduced energy
costs, primarily due to reduced idling, better route adherence and reduced overall
maintenance costs. They are un-realized since they are not necessarily managed well.
The simple reduction of idle time results in reduced carbon emissions, fuel costs and
By managing route adherence (the actual best route between two points), drivers
reduce daily driving by as much as 70 miles per day. Simple improvements in route
adherence will reduce wear and tear on vehicles, fuel consumption and provide more
opportunity to perform work tasks with enough time to do them well.
This series will highlight the business and use case-studies for these
benefits and others, as well as provide insight for managers and supervisors on how to
achieve these benefits.
